Throwback - Notting Hill Carnival

Notting Hill carnival, 2012

The Notting Hill carnival was launched in 1964 in London, UK. Back in the days, West-Indian steel drum bands would parade in the streets and carribean Londoners, especially the Trinidadian and Tobagonian community, would come out of their houses and follow them. The event celebrates the abolition of slavery. It is always held on the August bank holiday weekend.

Concert: Angelique Kidjo in London

Angelique Kidjo will be performing at the BT River of Music festival on Saturday 21 July as part of the Olympic Games concerts season. The  grammy-award winning singer from Benin says she was inspired by the music and political activism of Miriam Makeba.

She fights to get African music not listed under World Music: “For the painful reason of slavery, African music is behind every kind of music in the world. From classical to jazz and soul, it has spread because it is a music that allows human beings to express something and find hope even in darkness. African music speaks to everybody, regardless of their race or language.”

Trend: the front headwrap

Solange Knwoles; a fashionista

Front headwrapping is one of this summer's top black hair trend. Celebrities like Eva Marcille and Estelle have recently been spotted wearing front headwraps at several events.

The headwrap was originally a non-verbal communication tool in the traditional African societies informing about the  age, status and wealth of the woman wearing it. Today, headwraps are more a practical tool. They allow you to stay presentable at all times and take a break from styling your hair. They are indeed listed as a protective style.

Actress Eva Marcille, designer Asakeoge, singer Estelle are all wearing headwraps this summer

Learn the art of headwrapping

If are in London, England on 22 July and want to learn the art of African headwrapping, take a free course with top headwrap artist Dee McCalla. Sample fabrics will be provided, but please feel free to bring your own. This workshop is for all hair types.

Thumbs up to In Style Hair magazine for normalising black hair care

If you haven't bought the Spring/Summer issue of In Style Hair, it's time to get your hands on it. We were only after braiding ideas when we bought it so you can imagine our surprise when we found out that it was full of resources for black hair and skin care.

A full spread on relaxed hair tips; three double spread pages with tips from natural hair celebrities Yaya Da Costa, Solange Knowles and Corinne Bailey-Rae; tips to style curls and flat iron; make-up advice for dark skins. AND the distinction was made between warm and cold skin tones!

When it comes to integrating black beauty in mainstream magazines, the UK press is definitely more advanced than in other european countries. In Frace, Femme Actuelle, a popular female weekly magazine just launched a Special Issue dedicated to black beauty entitled 'Femme Actuelle BeautĂ© Noire'. This is so rare that all afro blogs are talking about it. Meanwhile, in Itally, Vogue is about to publish its second special issue dedicated to Africa.

As far as we're concerned, we prefer the 'silent revolution' approach that's taking place in the UK. Black beauty is slowly being integrated in mainstream publications so normalised that it doesn't even need 'special' issues.

L'Uomo Vogue releases May 2012 Africa issue

>Press release<

The May issue of L'Uomo Vogue is entirely dedicated to Africa, a continent under construction that is constantly evolving and always trying to improve its life conditions.

Africa needs to rebuild a new image, far removed from the one the media usually convey reporting on wars and famines that, although actually occurring, are not the only side to show.

L'Uomo Vogue decided to underline the positive side of this young continent from all points of view that is showing the willingness to succeed in fields such as the textile and the oil industry, from agriculture to the growing of cotton, coffee, cocoa, to tourism and cinema, as shown by Nollywood in Nigeria that produces 200 films every year. Education and health are the two main points the various governments are founding their battle on, building new schools, universities and well-equipped hospitals.

It’s a new representation of Africa - positive, creative and trusting its own assets: this is Africa evolving, that has already brought great changes.

The whole issue is a string of portraits of local personalities: Presidents, First Ladies, Queens, but also artists, singers, musicians, actors, fashion designers, writers, models, always portrayed in a positive, joyful way. They have all accepted to be featured in this issue because conveying a positive image of this Continent means bringing everyone’s attention on a world that so far has been "left out", with the exception of a few African countries that have become a tourist destination.

Conveying a new image is fundamental for Africa also to give hope to the young and to the people who are working hard on their homeland’s economic growth. "Africa does not need charity. Africa needs investment and partnership. Joining forces with civil society and private sector, including non-traditional players, like the fashion industry, has become indispensable. Sustainable development is my top priority", stated UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon who appears on the cover. Other spotlights include multi-platinum award winning South African vocalist Lira who has already achieved mass success in her homeland and is ready to be introduced to the international market.

L’Uomo Vogue‘s Africa issue comes at a time when more and more people, the fashion industry included, are looking to the continent as a fresh source of inspiration and innovation. Fashionista contributor and founder of Africa Style Daily Zandile Blay said. “From fashion to film to politics, the continent is in the midst of a total makeover so Franca Sozzani and L’Uomo Vogue are right to document it.” This new issue also solidifies Sozzani as an editor who is passionate about promoting diversity in fashion – the same woman behind the groundbreaking all black Vogue Italia back in 2008.
